Equipped with semi-professional video and sound gear I travelled to Japan and Ireland in 2009 and 2010. The tours have been financed by a travel grant. Initially, I constructed the goal of producing fictional research footage for a horror film project by a young director. It was about a Japanese demon, the Oni, and an Irish gnome, the Leprechaun. My research idea soon transformed into investigations prompted by a note from a fictional grandfather, who would have been an assistant director in film productions. Grandfather’s note only consisted of the words Oni, Leprechaun and villagers. These figures determined my tours in Japan and Ireland. However, at the end I simply observed the locales and settings that the words of the note had led me to.

Having started with a specific, narrated reason I wanted to end up with a video that is almost solely modes of travelling with and through a video camera. These modes have been created by merging various gazes with consumer HD video qualities like high depth of focus. Gazes in this respect can be broadly defined as ways of leading the viewer through a cinematic scenario. Neither subjective nor objective, these gazes give a self-determining presence to the video image.

Of course, this video has an author, myself. Yet, I am not responsible for it in any aspect. Not I, clearly speaking, but the gazes travelled in 16:9 through Japan and Ireland.

An artist’s book that centers on an essay by myself reflecting upon the status of the image in my video work is currently being developed in collaboration with designer David Bennewith. The video and the publication are made possible through a travel grant by the Hessische Kulturstiftung.

Mit semi-professionellem HD-Video- und Tonequipment ausgestattet, bereiste ich 2009 und 2010 Japan und Irland. Die Exkursionen wurden durch ein Reisestipendium finanziert. Ursprünglich wollte ich in den Ländern fiktives Motivmaterial eines jungen Regisseurs für ein Horrorfilm-Projekt erstellen. Es ging um einen japanischen Dämon, den Oni, und einen irischen Kobold, den Leprechaun. Aus der Motivsuche wurde bald eine Recherche zu einer Notiz eines erfundenen Großvaters, der Aufnahmeleiter beim Film gewesen sein sollte. Die Notiz bestand lediglich aus den Worten Oni, Leprechaun und Dorfbevölkerung. Diese Figuren bestimmten dann meine Routen in den Ländern. Am Ende jedoch beobachtete ich durch die Videokamera nur noch die Orte oder Situationen, zu denen ich mittels der Notizworte gelangt war.

Mit einem konkreten, erzählten Anlass beginnend und diesen bald wieder verlassend, liegen im finalen Videoschnitt nichts mehr anderes vor als bloße Modi des Reisens mit und durch eine Videokamera. Diese Modi wurden erzeugt durch das Zusammenbringen von verschiedenen Blickführungen mit Charaketistika von Consumer HD-Video wie beispielsweise hoher Tiefenschärfe. Die Blickführungen ähneln dabei denen aus Spielfilmerzählungen. Die hierdurch hervorgerufenen Blicke sind weder subjektiv noch objektiv, weil sie dem Videobild eine eigenständige Präsenz geben.

Natürlich hat dieses Video einen zu benennenden Autor, mich, aber ich bin nicht mehr in jeder Hinsicht der Verantwortliche. Eigentlich bin nicht ich, sondern die Blicke in 16:9 durch Japan und Irland gereist.
